FAQ

What does eMAS stand for?

eMAS is the electronic Minor Ailments Service for Scottish pharmacists and the equivalent of ETP, targeted for pharmacists in England.

What is eMAS?

In short, eMAS will allow you to prescribe free* treatment for minor ailments for patients who are exempt from prescription charges*.

What do I need to do to get eMAS software?

AAH’s LINKEvolution system has been designed to use ETP technology to dispense eMAS prescriptions. For further information on eMAS and LINKEvolution please email etp@aah.co.uk

How does eMAS work?

A patient first needs to register with a pharmacy, at which point the pharmacist will complete an electronic record of that registration to be held on a central server. Pharmacists can then prescribe using an electronic prescription form. This information is automatically sent to the central server and added to the patient’s records, and transferred to Central Services Scotland who will manage the reimbursement.

What are the benefits ?

For community pharmacists, eMAS brings major benefits. Firstly, they save time by generating prescriptions using a computer, rather than having to hand-write them. In addition, this will provide access to all registered patient records.

Does eMAS improve clinical safety?

Using ETP technology to dispense eMAS prescriptions, LINKEvolution guarantees improved clinical safety, increased accuracy for PMR data and saves time for the pharmacist.

Will eMAS support other services pharmacists provide?

LINKEvolution gives you immediate access to patients’ medical records – vital as you carry out consultations. Patient Intervention notes are also integrated within the system, so you can record interventions straight away and add them to a patient record.

When can pharmacists start registering patients?

Registration for MAS began on 1st June 2006. Registrations must be completed on formal stationery (e.g. CP2 forms), which will be supplied to pharmacies by the NHS Board. However pharmacists must be eMAS enabled (have eMAS software loaded on their PMR system.) before they can start to register patients.

What information is essential to register a patient?

The following information is required to successfully register a patient for MAS: Family Name / Surname Postcode Date of Birth Gender The CHI number is not required, the PMR system will insert the CHI number into the electronic message and send it back to the PMR system.
