An advanced service within the new contract, Medicines Use Reviews, gives pharmacists the opportunity to play a closer role in their patients’ ongoing care.
Driven by the Government's focus on improving the management of long-term medical conditions, MURs are aimed at those who are taking multiple medicines on an ongoing basis. Its goal is to help people to use their medicines more effectively, while increasing communication and knowledge between medical professionals.
This is the first time that community pharmacists have had the opportunity to deliver a nationally recognised and remunerated clinical service. But to provide MURs, you and your pharmacy must first gain accreditation.
Carried out generally every 12 months, a Medicines Use Review involves the pharmacist sitting down with their patient in a dedicated consultation area and discussing the use of their various medicines. As well as allowing the pharmacist to identify, discuss and resolve ineffective medications, pharmacists will be able to note side effects and drug interactions that may affect compliance. The pharmacist will then complete a report and send it to the patient's GP.
The result will be the improved clinical and cost-effectiveness of prescribed medicines, as well as reduced medical wastage.
LINKEvolution V9 allows pharmacists to follow the step by step MUR 'wizard' which has been developed especially to help record MUR information in an electronic version of the standard form. This gives a total overview of the patient and the way they use their medication which is integrated with existing data in the patient's medical record, and provides the comprehensive audit trail demanded by the new contract.
V9 of the software also includes a generic name look-up facility, enabling pharmacists to instantly look up any generic drug listed on a script and see which products are available.
Pharmacies who have not updated to V9 or subsequent versions should contact a member of the Customer Technology Team on 02476 625562 or email us at linkenquiries@aah.co.uk to discuss an upgrade.
