MUR is an acronym for the service called Medicine Use Review. This service is provided by pharmacists as part of the Advanced Services offered under the new contract.
MUR’s form part of the Advanced Services offered under the new contract and as a pharmacist you are obliged to offer this service and will receive remuneration from the Government.
Carried out every 12 months, an MUR involves sitting down with a patient in a dedicated consultation area to discus the use of their various medicines. As well as allowing pharmacists to identify, discuss and resolve ineffective medications, they will be able to note side effects and drug interactions that could affect compliance. Pharmacists then complete a report and send it to the patient’s GP.
This Advanced Service is driven by the Governments focus on improving long-term medical conditions. Pharmacists will be able to make a note of side effects and conditions which in turn will resolve ineffective medications and improve patient care.
The Government has agreed to remunerate £25 to the pharmacist for every MUR and Prescription Intervention completed under this service.
Pharmacies can claim for a max. of 400 reviews in the financial year 07/08 (1st April 2007 - 31st March 2008)if they have made arrangements to provide Advanced Services before 1 October 2007. For pharmacies that enter arrangements on or after 1 October 2007 the limit is 200 for the financial year 07/08.
The new contract sets out guidelines as to what is expected from a consultation area. The patient and pharmacist must be able to sit together, be able to talk at normal speaking volumes without being overheard by staff or customers and the area must be clearly signed as a private consultation area. Pharmacy contractors will be responsible for certifying to the PCT that their consultation area meets these requirements.
LINKEvolution has an electronic version of the standard MUR form together with a step by step MUR wizard to guide you through completing the form. This information is integrated in to the system and the patient’s medical record providing the comprehensive audit trail necessary under the new contract.
You will need to have a terminal in your dispensary running the LINKEvolution dispensary management software. AAH can provide an additional laptop for use in the consultation area; this is linked to the main system and reduces the amount of space being taken up. Additional printers can be provided for use in the consultation area.
